Mental toughness does not just happen.

Athletes spend years learning the skills of their sport. They practice technique, train their bodies, build strength, improve speed, and develop conditioning. But the mental side of performance deserves the same intentional attention.

In Episode 173 of The Mental Mettle Podcast, Coach Matt Thomann sits down with Raphael McMaster, founder and executive director of Indivisible Arts, mindset coach for the Mira Costa Basketball Team, and creator of the Fundamental Life Tools book and curriculum.

Raphael’s work centers on mindful awareness, emotional resilience, human potential, and practical tools that help people navigate life with more clarity and intention. Through Indivisible Arts, he has created opportunities for young people and adults to build skills that support both performance and well-being. The organization was named Hermosa Beach’s Non-Profit of the Year in 2025, and Raphael was also named Hermosa Beach Person of the Year.

His background is as diverse as his approach. Raphael has worked in art, photography, music, design, entrepreneurship, snowboards, and clothing, including product design for Puma and award-winning website projects. Today, his focus is helping people develop the inner tools needed to pursue their potential and respond well when life gets difficult.

This conversation centers on a truth that applies to athletes, coaches, parents, and educators: mental skills have to be practiced before pressure arrives.

Breathing, visualization, gratitude, compassion, mindful awareness, and forgiveness are not abstract ideas. They are tools. And like any tool, they become more effective through repetition and practice.

Coach Matt and Raphael also explore the idea that athletes have three skill sets:

  • Game skills.
  • Physical skills.
  • Mental skills.

For decades, athletes and teams have intentionally developed the first two. It is time to give the mental game the same level of focus.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why mental toughness must be trained.
  • The Fundamental Life Tools and how they apply to performance and life.
  • Why athletes need to practice mental skills before adversity hits.
  • Mindful awareness and staying present under pressure.
  • Visualization and the power of imagination.
  • Gratitude, compassion, and forgiveness after mistakes.
  • Building emotional resilience through daily practice.
  • The role coaches and parents play in developing mentally strong athletes.
  • Turning big mental concepts into practical, repeatable tools.
  • Pursuing human potential on and off the field.

The mental game is not something you simply have or do not have.

You build it. You practice it. You develop it—one intentional choice at a time.
