The Monthly Mettle Challenge is back—and this time, it’s stretching me in more ways than one. June’s challenge is all about yoga. I’ll be honest: I don’t like yoga. It’s time-consuming, I’m not good at it, and sometimes it just plain hurts. But as I’ve learned through this journey, growth doesn’t come from comfort. If I want to get stronger—physically and mentally—I need to do hard things on purpose. That’s what forging your mettle is all about.

Why Yoga, Why Now?

I’ve tackled gratitude, faith, fasting, digital detox, and even fire-and-ice recovery in previous challenges. Each one brought its own rewards and lessons. But yoga? It’s a different kind of tough. It’s not about brute strength or endurance. It’s about patience, presence, and humility—qualities I know I need, but don’t always want to practice.

Research from positive psychology tells us that up to 40% of our happiness and well-being comes from intentional activities—doing things on purpose to make our lives better. That’s the heart of the Monthly Mettle Challenge: choosing to do things that stretch us, even when we’d rather not.

Facing the Challenge with Friends

In this episode, I’m joined by Coach Katie Gamby and my wife, Dana Thomann, as we dive into the realities of starting (or restarting) a yoga practice. We swap stories—from our first awkward attempts (including a session that nearly ended with us getting struck by lightning) to the small wins that come from just showing up on the mat.

Katie shares how yoga has helped her manage stress and build resilience, while Dana highlights the mental clarity and emotional balance she’s found through regular practice. Together, we explore how yoga isn’t just a physical workout—it’s a way to reset your mind, work through challenges, and build the kind of toughness that lasts.

The Science Behind Yoga

Why bother with yoga? The studies are clear:

  • Yoga reduces stress and activates your body’s relaxation response
  • It helps manage anxiety and enhances emotional resilience
  • It boosts serotonin and supports overall mood
  • It improves flexibility, mobility, and recovery—especially for athletes
  • It sharpens focus and mindfulness, both on and off the mat

Embracing What’s Difficult

If you’re like me and have avoided yoga because it’s uncomfortable, maybe it’s time to reconsider. The Monthly Mettle Challenge is about doing what we know is good for us, even when it’s tough. That’s how we forge true resilience—by leaning into discomfort, not running from it.

So, whether you’re a seasoned yogi or a total beginner, I invite you to join us this month. Strike a pose, embrace the challenge, and see how yoga can help you grow—physically, mentally, and emotionally.
