Most people see the Olympics as a dream; very few see the invoice that comes with it.

In Episode 141 of The Mental Mettle Podcast, “Shane Fisher – USA Bobsled Pilot (Part 2),” we go behind the highlight reels and into the financial and emotional reality of chasing an Olympic dream as a Team USA athlete.

The broken side of the Olympic pipeline

Shane opens Part 2 with a hard truth: a lot of things in the Olympic space are broken. The ability for athletes to train at a world-class level while also building a career, supporting a family, and even living a normal middle-class life is disappearing. Unless you’re one of a handful of household names, there is no million-dollar contract, no guaranteed funding, and often no safety net.

He and Matt talk candidly about what that actually looks like for most Team USA athletes:

  • Minimal or inconsistent financial support
  • Side jobs squeezed in around brutal training schedules
  • Constant decisions between paying bills and paying for travel, housing, or equipment

The mental game still matters—but mindset alone can’t fix a broken system when athletes are carrying financial stress into every training cycle.

Planting trees you’ll never sit under

One of the most powerful ideas Shane shares is his guiding picture for the American Paragons Foundation: planting trees in the shade of which you’ll never sit. His nonprofit is built around the belief that the Olympic pathway should be survivable—not just for a lucky few, but for the grinders who keep showing up year after year.

He explains that many Olympic hopefuls are good enough to represent their country, but not famous enough to attract major sponsors. Without structural support, too many are forced out of their sport long before their potential is reached—not because they lack talent or work ethic, but because they run out of money and margin.

American Paragons exists to change that trajectory for underfunded athletes across a wide range of sports, including those most people only watch every four years.

How American Paragons stands in the gap

In this episode, Shane breaks down how the American Paragons Foundation is designed to support athletes in practical, sustainable ways:

  • Career-friendly employment
Connecting athletes with employers who understand the demands of elite training—flexible schedules, extended travel, and seasonal peaks—so they can pay the bills without sacrificing their Olympic window.
  • Storytelling and visibility
Partnering with media platforms and storytellers (like The Mental Mettle Podcast) to share athlete journeys, build awareness, and open doors for support that would never come if their stories stayed in the shadows.
  • Mentorship from those who’ve lived it
Matching athletes with mentors who have walked a similar path and understand the unique pressures, tradeoffs, and long game of pursuing the Olympics.
  • Housing and lodging support
Working with hosts and housing partners to provide places to stay near training centers and competition sites, easing one of the biggest financial burdens elite athletes face.

Instead of treating these athletes like disposable entertainment every four years, American Paragons treats them like whole people who need community, opportunity, and support to keep going.

Why this conversation matters

If you’ve ever cheered for Team USA, this episode invites you to see the full picture of what it costs to wear “USA” across your chest. It’s about more than national pride; it’s about the mental, emotional, and financial realities that shape whether an athlete can stay in the fight long enough to reach their peak.

Part 2 with Shane Fisher will change the way you watch Olympic hopefuls—and show you how fans, employers, and everyday supporters can become part of the solution instead of just spectators.
