Olympic dreams are usually built on highlight reels and podium shots. In Episode 140 of The Mental Mettle Podcast, “Shane Fisher – USA Bobsled Pilot (Part 1),” you meet the reality behind that picture: an elite athlete grinding in the shadows, building his mind as intentionally as his body, and working to lift up other underfunded Team USA athletes through the American Paragons Foundation.

From tennis to decathlon to bobsled

Shane Fisher didn’t grow up dreaming of bobsled runs; he started as a serious tennis player before shifting into the decathlon in his pursuit of the Olympics. As his strength and speed grew, an opportunity opened with USA Bobsled, a sport hungry for powerful, explosive athletes who are crazy enough to fly down an ice track in a carbon-fiber tube. Today, Shane is a pilot for Team USA, steering at high speeds while leaning heavily on the mindset and mental discipline he’s developed across three very different sports.

Why mental skills are his “secret weapon”

Yes, Shane lifts, sprints, and trains like a world-class power-speed athlete—but he is crystal clear that his greatest edge is mental, not physical. He and Matt unpack how visualization, focus, confidence, and the ability to navigate fear separate those who have the raw tools from those who can actually perform at an elite level under pressure. Shane describes mental skills as “pillars” of performance—attitude, mindset, and coordination—that must be trained with the same seriousness as strength or sport-specific skills if you want to reach your true ceiling.

The myth of the “funded” Team USA athlete

One of the most eye-opening parts of this episode is Shane’s honesty about what life is really like for most Team USA athletes. Contrary to what many fans assume, only a small fraction of athletes receive meaningful funding or full support; the vast majority are scraping by, working odd jobs, couch-surfing, and pouring every spare dollar into training, travel, and housing. Because intense training schedules make it difficult to hold a traditional job, many athletes are stuck in a cycle of financial stress while representing their country on the world stage.

Why he founded the American Paragons Foundation

Out of that tension, Shane launched the American Paragons Foundation—a nonprofit dedicated to supporting underfunded Team USA athletes across “small” sports, women’s sports, and Paralympic events. The mission is to connect athletes with:

  • Employers who understand the unique demands of elite training and will work with their schedules
  • Housing partners (like vacation rentals) who can help with places to stay while traveling for training and competition
  • Media partners (including The Mental Mettle Podcast) who can tell their stories, build visibility, and open doors for sponsorships and support

Paragons are “shining examples,” and this foundation exists to make sure those examples aren’t forced out of their sports simply because they can’t afford to keep going.

Why this conversation matters

Part 1 of this two-part episode digs into Shane’s background, his unlikely path to bobsled, and his belief that mental toughness is the true differentiator at the highest levels of sport. It also sets the stage for Part 2, where he and Matt go deeper into the American Paragons Foundation, the financial realities of Olympic hopefuls, and specific ways listeners can step in to support America’s next generation of Olympians.

If you care about mental toughness, athlete wellbeing, or the stories behind the flag, Episode 140 will both inspire you and challenge how you think about supporting Team USA.
